A think-aloud session, back as findings graded by severity.

Verbato writes a usability findings report from the recording of your usability session. A usability findings report lists the problems people met while using a product, each graded by severity, with the evidence from the session and a recommendation.

For UX researchers who run moderated and think-aloud sessions.

Start with a recording

  • YouTube, Spotify, Google Drive, Dropbox and more than 1,000 sites.
  • Free plan: 2 h of audio a month. Files up to 40 min.
  • Without an account, your recording is held for 24 hours. It starts when you create your account; if you don't, it is deleted.
  • Your recordings are never used to train or improve models.

Your recording is saved for 24 hours. It starts when you create your account.

The transcript excerpt and the document are written to show the format. Every name, figure and quote is invented.

OK, amount, date... I don't see how often. I'm going back.

Take your time. What are you looking for?

  3. 07:12

Where do I say every month? I only see a date.

No. I'm starting the form again.

Executive summary

One participant attempted to set up a recurring transfer. The task was completed on the third attempt. The main obstacle was the frequency control. Renaming that control is recommended.

Method and participants

P3, think-aloud, task: schedule a monthly transfer to a savings account.

Findings by severity

Critical — none observed.

Serious — P3 did not find where to set the frequency and abandoned the form twice. (appears in this excerpt)

Evidence: P3: "Where do I say every month? I only see a date." (appears in this excerpt)

Recommendation: label the control "Repeats".

Minor — P3 hesitated at the confirmation screen, re-reading the amount.

Recommendation: show the amount in the confirm button.

Positive observations

P3 found the account picker immediately: "Oh, that's obvious, good."

Open questions — also part of a usability findings report; nothing in this example's recording calls for it, so it is left out.

How your usability findings report is written

  • Each finding carries its evidence, so its severity can be checked against the session.

  • Every finding gets one recommendation, and only one.

  • What worked well is reported with its evidence, not only the problems.

  • Participants appear by code. The transcript keeps whatever was said.

Your format, not ours

The sections of your usability findings report and the way it is written are yours to change. To fix a document, say what is wrong in your own words.

  1. 1You correct it

“Keep the Executive summary to a few lines.”

That usability findings report changes. Nothing else does.

  2. 2You say it again

Make the same correction on a later usability findings report and Verbato asks: “You've changed this before. Always?”

  3. 3You decide

Answer “Always” and it is kept as a rule, applied from your next usability findings report on. Answer “Just this once” and nothing is kept. Documents already written stay as they are, and nothing becomes a rule unless you confirm it.

  4. 4Your rules

    I keep “Executive summary” short.Undo

Every rule you have kept is listed, and you can undo any of them. An undone rule stops applying from your next usability findings report.

How it works

Upload a file, paste a link, record in your browser, or send a voice note by Telegram or email. Verbato makes a word-for-word transcript, which you can edit and which stays beside the document. Your usability findings report is written from it, in minutes.

Recording limits

A recording made in your browser can run up to 30 min on every plan; a longer session goes in as a file you upload. A free account takes recordings of up to 40 min each; for longer ones, see pricing.

Your recording

Deleted after 7 days by default, together with its transcript and documents. You can keep a project longer, up to your plan's limit. Deleting a recording leaves a receipt you can download. Nothing you record is used to train or improve AI models.

Questions about the usability findings report

Who decides the severity and the recommendation?
The report proposes both from what happened in the session. Treat them as a draft to confirm or change before you share the report.
Can it see what the participant did on screen?
No. The report is written from what was said, so it knows a moment only if someone described it. That is what thinking aloud is for; say it yourself when a participant goes quiet.
Does it combine several sessions into one report?
No. Each report covers one recorded session. It makes no claim about people in general and does not compare participants across sessions. That synthesis stays yours.
What does the report say if nothing critical happened?
It says so, as in the example: “Critical — none observed.”

Run the session. Confirm the findings. Share the report.
